REVIEWER – NICOLE ASHLEY
Nicole Ashley is an international portrait and wedding photographer based out of Alberta, Canada. Her influence has branched out far beyond the boundaries of her city, bringing her throughout much of Canada, and on to international destinations such as Iceland, Italy, New York and Australia.
Nicole has built an impressive resume, photographing magazine features, best selling novel covers, internationally acclaimed musicians, music festivals and fashion shows.
With an innate creativity, unparalleled work ethic, and a passion for the entire craft, Nicole Ashley is not only a photographer but an artist.
Nicole’s most recent acknowledgements include the 2017 Couple’s Choice award, World’s Best Wedding Photographer 2016 & 2017 by Junebug Weddings, and Canada’s top 30 under 30. Not only an artist, but as an educator in her craft, she will be speaking at several awards winning photo conferences throughout the world.
REVIEWER – JACEK MALEC
Jacek Malec graduated in Art History, Museology and Curatorial Studies from the University of Wroclaw in Poland and has over 25 years of experience in the arts and culture sector, having previously held roles as Director/Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art Calgary/MOCA Calgary (previously the Triangle Gallery of Visual Arts) and the Chief Curator at the Art Forum Gallery. Jacek is a well-known art historian, critic, and lecturer with extensive international curatorial experience in Canadian and international modern and contemporary visual/new media arts, architecture and design with a track record of scholarly researched publications and exhibition projects, including creation of International Art Exchange Program while at the Triangle Gallery and MOCA Calgary. Jacek Malec is a member of the International Association of Art Critics (AICA) – Canadian Chapter and a past Vice President of that international arts organization. Since 2016 he has been working as the Executive Director/Chief Curator of the Harcourt House Artist Run Centre in Edmonton.
REVIEWER – JOHN FREEMAN
John Freeman was born in 1944 in the city of Toronto and has resided in Alberta since 1947. He received his education at the University of Calgary, The Alberta College of Art and the University of Alberta. He taught art at the University of Alberta from 1972 to 2005 as a tenured faculty member. He is now retired from the University of Alberta and has started a fine art digital printing company in Edmonton called The Big Pixel Inc.
Over the past 40 years, Freeman has exhibited in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada and internationally. His work is represented in many public, private and corporate collections.
In his art practice he has used a wide range of materials and technologies – sculpture, painting, drawing, print making photography, and video. His recent work involves the development of large format digitally generated and printed images that play with the nature of representation and reality mediated by photography and text.
Starting in 2016, he has begun to revisit photographic still life images set in shallow or ambiguous spaces as well as continuing to explore the possibilities of text and image.
REVIEWER – KIM LARSON
Kim Larson is an industry-leading art director whose 15-year career has been marked by a combination of versatility and creativity throughout the province. Kim is the art director of Avenue, Eighteen Bridges and Leap magazines. Previously as the art director at Venture Publishing, she guided Alberta Venture and Alberta Oil magazines to numerous high-profile provincial and national magazine awards. She is passionate about all things magazines.
